Google's Doodle Blackened In Protest Of SOPA & PIPA
By: Navneet Kaushal 2012-01-19 Yesterday, Google joined Wikipedia and other sites in the protest against Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) being debated in Congress. Google has a link on its home page leading people to sign up in the protest against SOPA and PIPA. The link also notifies users of Google's opposition to controversial antipiracy bills before the Congress. This is what Google has conveyed to various media houses, "Like many businesses, entrepreneurs, and Web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue Web sites without asking American companies to censor the Internet," a Google representative said. "So tomorrow we will be joining many other tech companies to highlight this issue on our U.S. home page." Google has also joined the tech firms opposing the two bills currently being discussed in Congress. Google is of the view that web censorship will have a huge negative impact on the US businesses. In protest, Google has covered its logo with a black strip and there is a one line message that goes- Tell Congress: Please dont censor the web! The one liner is an appeal that takes you to an End Piracy, Not Liberty page. The page is a petition form where people can sign up and join the protest against the legislation. People can also share the following message- Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA. The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late. There is the latest number of people who have already signed the petition. Will this drive by the tech giants affect the Congress decision? Well have to wait and watch.
