Google News Introduces Standout Tag Option
By: Navneet Kaushal 2011-09-27 Now online news organizations can ensure that a significant news published by them is more likely to catch the notice of target readers. Google News has rolled standout tag option for the US edition. Upto 7 news can be tagged per week, Google News will mark these tagged pieces as featured on Google News and News Search Results. The publisher just has to put the tag in the HTML header of the concerned article. The syntax for this tag: <link rel="standout" href=http://www.example.com/scoop_article_2.html />. It may be mentioned here that since the tag belongs to the HTML header of the article, therefore it is visible only through Google News and other automated systems, and not to the direct readers of the articles. The publisher can use the option to tag not only its own news stories, but also that from other sources. Google News has requested news organizations to mark at the most seven of their news stories in one week, marking of more than seven news stories in one week may result in their tags getting less recognized, if not getting completely ignored. However, there is no such limit as far as marking worthy news stories from other sources, with a news organization being able to mark as many such stories as it wishes in a week. Google has expressed this belief that this new tag system will help a worthy news content in getting its due credit and prominence. However, it has also made it clear that the ultimate success of this initiative is dependent on the appropriate co-operation of the publisher community. It is notable here that Google came up with similar metatags in the past to ensure that the same help news contents get their due credit. And the feedback received from those initiatives has been used to design this latest tag. In August Google came up with Editors' Picks, which entails display of an original content that a publisher has selected as a highlight from its publication. Naturally there is a curiosity to watch whether Editors' Pick and Standout Tag can work in a combined manner. However, a news organization needs to get approval for Editors' Pick, while the Standout Tag can be used by any of them.
