For years, Google have been providing notices for malware in their search results, with a separate warning page. On Friday, December 17 (2010) a new notification for hacked sites has been added to Google's search results. This addition will help users avoid sites that may have been compromised and altered by a third party, usually for spam.

So now, when you search for a site on Google, you will be able to know that the information on that site is genuine to the original publisher.

The newly added notification looks like this:

Next time you search for a site on Google, and notice the This site may be compromised link in your search result, it means that the site might already have been hacked in to. If you click on the same link, you will be taken to an article in Google's Help Center. The article explains and clarifies more about the notice.

In case of any suspicious detection, Google will also notify the site's webmaster. This will help the site owners discover any hacking issue leading to their site's abuse more quickly. The webmasters can then correct the problem by the earliest. This might, in a way, affect the site's (notified as compromised) search traffic, and can be a concern for webmasters. However, Google says that once the problem is resolved, the warning label will be automatically removed from their search results, typically in a matter of days. Webmasters can also request a review of their sites to quicken the removal of the said notice.

Therefore, if you are a user, the next time you see this notification appearing on your search result you should avoid it and let the webmasters know about it. If you are a webmaster, it is best to take the needful measures to secure your site and improve traffic.

This notification feature is Google yet another effort to make the web a safer place, but it can only happen with the co-operation of the users and webmasters too.
