Move over Google, theres a new search engine on the block which claims to use a hands on approach to tailor search results. Blekko was launched publicly in beta last Monday to a lot of fanfare. Most people are asking will it be a Google killer. Not likely and it doesnt want to be.

Should Google Be Scared Of Blekko?

Blekko founder Mike Marksona and CEO Rick Skrenta say that Blekko has no intention of competing with Google whatsoever, they simply wanted to create a search portal that would give more precise results. They are looking forward to build Blekko into a no nonsense search engine that will not show irrelevant spam links in its result page.

So what makes Blekko different from the existing search engines?

Blekko uses slashtag technology that filters out all irrelevant spam links from search results thereby displaying the most trusted and authentic sites in contrast to Google and Bing who gives results searched by a computer algorithm. The results from thei algorithms change constantly and results on both of these search engines do not always give you links with useful content. Blekko on the other hand will place your search query into one of its predefined categories.

For example if you are searching for common cold remedies' Blekko will use its slashtag technology and feed your query into the health section and list the most authentic links barring spam sites. Instead of searching the entire web, a slashtag allows you to search the site you want to search.

When we started this company our goal was to build a search engine that not only let you do your usual searches but also lets you do searches that you just can't do anywhere else, Skrenta said.

Blekko becomes people driven as users create slashtags that create lists of recommended sites. It's like the Wikipedia of search engines where people can edit the content.

A mobile friendly version of Blekko is also available for users on the move.

Skrenta says that even if a handful of users get involved Blekko will soon offer the web audience a more realistic search experience. So why not help him out and give it a try here.
