Yahoo Suffers Ill-Timed Outage
By: Doug Caverly 2010-10-15 Rumor has it that AOL, with the help of a venture capital firm or two, is interested in buying Yahoo. Unfortunately for Yahoo shareholders, the company's main property took a bit of a dive yesterday afternoon, suffering an embarrassing outage for the better part of an hour.
Yahoo.com went down around 2:15 PM Sunnyvale time, offering only the message "Server Hangup" to would-be visitors. That's not the sort of performance a person expects from a tech company that's been around since 1994 and has a market cap of $22 billion. Yahoo's response on another level wasn't too great, either. No real explanations or details were ever shared by execs or engineers. The official statement Yahoo sent to news outlets only read, "For a brief period this afternoon, Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users. We have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected." Yahoo.com began working normally around 3:10, anyway, and has remained up since then, so presumably everything's under control. It's just hard not to wonder how many dollars the outage knocked off AOL's potential acquisition offer.
