Google Updates Android Driving Aid
By: Doug Caverly 2010-10-04 Last week, Google CEO Eric Schmidt horrified car guys everywhere by suggesting that cars should drive themselves, and that it was in fact "a bug that cars were invented before computers." But an updated Car Home for Android tool nonetheless looks like something drivers should welcome.
Car Home is supposed to function as a sort of homepage for people who are on the go. Drivers can just customize a list of apps they find useful for one-touch access (and they can customize the wallpaper and icons while they're at it, too). Convenience is the major focus. A post on the Google Mobile Blog explained, "You can launch Car Home by opening the app directly from your phone or docking your phone in a car dock, and now you can automatically switch to Car Home when your phone pairs with any Bluetooth device." Car Home should be most valuable for people who don't have in-dash navigation systems or little screens from TomTom or Garmin suction-cupped in the cabin, since its main offering is GPS navigation. Then an added bonus is the option of using voice-activated commands, and contacts and music are among the other things Google thinks people will like to have on tap. The one problem with Car Home for Android relates to compatibility, since updated tool only works with the Nexus One and Motorola Droid for now.
