Google Instant Debuts
By: Doug Caverly 2010-09-09 Give Google another tally mark under the "Wins" heading. Yesterday, the search giant unveiled an important new technology that it calls Google Instant, and this tech promises to make the search process faster and more intuitive than ever.
Think of Google Instant as search suggestions on steroids. When an individual's signed into his (or her) Google account, the new feature predicts the rest of the search query in light gray text as soon as he (or she) starts typing. Then - and this is the key part - Google also shows full pages of search results beneath the search box as the person types the term. Meaning you can see search results for "amazon" after just typing "a," for example. This has the potential to save people quite a few keystrokes, and with Google's hundreds of millions of users, that could add up to a huge amount of time. Marissa Mayer wrote on the Official Google Blog, "-W-e estimate that we'll save our users 11 hours with each passing second!" A key sort of sub-point: Google Instant isn't supposed to slow down the average Internet connection. Also, it can be disabled if you for any reason decide you don't like it. Mobile users and folks who are accustomed to performing searches through toolbars should know that Google's working to implement Google Instant in those areas, too.
