Yahoo And Bing Get Nearly A Quarter Of The Search Market
By: Mike Sachoff 2010-09-08 Google captured 71.59 percent of all U.S. searches for the month of August, according to the latest report from Hitwise. Yahoo Search landed in the second spot with 14.28 percent of the search market followed by Microsofts Bing with 9.87 percent.
The remaining 62 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis report accounted for 4.26 percent of U.S. searches. The percentage of U.S. searches for the one-week ending August 28 for the Bing combined powered search accounted for 24.56 percent, as Yahoo Search and Bing received 14.32 percent and 10.24 percent, respectively. Search engines continue to be the main way Internet users navigate to key industry categories. Comparing July with August, shopping and social networking categories showed double-digit increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines. Google's percentage of upstream traffic grew for the automotive, shopping and travel categories. Bing saw double-digit growth in four categories - automotive, health, shopping and travel - including a 66 percent increase in the shopping category. Longer search queries - those averaging five to eight words long - decreased 2 percent from July to August. Four- to seven-word searches all decreased 2 percent. Two-word searches comprised the majority of searches, amounting to 23.71 percent of all queries. Shorter search queries - one to four words - were flat from July to August.
