Group Goes After Google CEO Over Privacy
By: Mike Sachoff 2010-09-03 Consumer Watchdogs InsideGoogle.com has taken its online privacy campaign to New Yorks Times Square, where it has purchased a 540 sq. ft. Jumbotron digital advertisement promoting an animated video satirizing Google CEO Eric Schmidts attitude toward consumer privacy.
"We're satirizing Schmidt in the most highly-trafficked public square in thenation to make the public aware of how out of touch Schmidt and Google arewhen it comes to our privacy rights," said Jamie Court, president ofConsumer Watchdog."America needs a Do Not Track Me' list and Google is Exhibit A in the casefor it." Titled "Don't Be Evil?" the avatar-style animation features Schmidt drivingan ice cream truck and secretly spying on children. The animated short wasproduced by the nonprofit consumer group to shine a spotlight on the needfor Congress to enact a national "Do Not Track Me" list. When questioned about privacy, Schmidt he has said, "If you have somethingthat you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in thefirst place." Recently, he suggested children could change their names whenthey got older if they wanted to escape what was embarrassing and public intheir online lives. "We think there should be another way to protect the public's onlineprivacy: a Do Not Track Me' list that prevents Google or any other Internetcompany from tracking your every move online," said John M. Simpson, director of the group's Inside Google Project. About the Author: Mike is a staff writer for WebProNews. Visit WebProNews for the latest ebusiness news. |
