Google Gets Hands On Like.com
By: Doug Caverly 2010-08-23 Look for Google's product search (and maybe plain old image search) capabilities to improve in the near future. Late Friday, Like.com, a site that specializes in visual shopping, announced that it was acquired by the search giant for an unspecified amount.
What will happen next isn't entirely clear, as Google's stayed mum with regards to the entire deal. It looks like Like.com will remain in working order, however, and Like.com's CEO, Munjal Shah, seems pleased with the situation, Shah stated on Like.com's homepage, "Since 2006, Like.com has been moving the frontiers of eCommerce forward one step at a time. We were the first to bring visual search to shopping, the first to build an automated cross-matching system for clothing, and more. We didn't stop there, and don't have any plans to stop now." He then added, "We see joining Google as a way to supersize our vision and supercharge our passion. This is something we are truly excited about." Google fans should be eager, too. Like.com is meant to find images that resemble other images, so a fashion-related search for "red pumps" will turn up product results for spiffy shoes, for example, not an item that belongs next to a bicycle or in an Austin Powers movie. It should be interesting to see how (and how quickly) Google implements this tech. About the Author: Doug is a staff writer for SearchNewz, WebProNews, InternetFinancialNews, and SecurityProNews. |
