Google's Market Share Slips In July
By: Doug Caverly 2010-08-17 Another report regarding the search market has arrived, and if comScore's to be believed, it's more accurate than ever. Unfortunately for a certain search giant, it looks like Google lost a bit of market share on a month-over-month basis.
Let's first touch on comScore's tweaked approach to making measurements. Cameron Meierhoefer explained on the comScore Voices blog, "-W-e will begin reporting an additional view of our U.S. Core Search data known as 'Explicit Core Search' alongside our standard Core Search market reporting. comScore defines 'Explicit Core Search' as user engagement with a search service with the intent to retrieve search results." Moving on to the statistics themselves, Google's market share decreased from 66.2 percent in June to 65.8 percent in July, according to comScore. Which obviously isn't terrible, but given that it's sort of tradition for Google to gain ground, isn't a good sign for the search giant, either. As for how Google's main competitors did, Yahoo made the most progress, increasing its market share from 16.7 percent in June to 17.1 percent in July. Meanwhile, Bing's share of the search market didn't expand or shrink, staying dead even at 11.0 percent, instead. That puts the Yahoo/Bing combination a little closer to catching Google, which has to encourage the two organizations as they move forward with their partnership this fall and winter.
