Xinhua And China Mobile In Joint Search Venture
By: Mike Sachoff 2010-08-12 China's state run news agency, Xinhua, said Thursday it will launch a search engine company with China Mobile, in a move that will have it competing with search leaders Baidu and Google. The company's name is "Search Engine New Media International Communications," according to Xinhua.
The joint venture will focus on creating a search engine while actively developing other businesses, including the Internet, print media and advertising. "Search engines, which have powerful information integration abilities, play an increasingly important role in disseminating information and influencing public opinion," said Zhou Xisheng, vice president of Xinhua. Sha Yuejia, vice president of China Mobile, said the Internet search market has great potential but is also extremely competitive. The joint venture will make use of the respective advantages of the two sides to provide attractive and competitive products and services to establish its core competitiveness," Sha said. He added China Mobile has already successfully partnered with Xinhua to provide mobile news and audio-visual programs to customers. Mobile search in China is currently led by Baidu with about a third of the market, followed by venture capital-backed Easou with 17 percent and Google with about 12 percent, according to marketing consultant Analysys International.
