Security Firm Labels Google ''King Of Malware''
By: Doug Caverly 2010-07-30 The search engine that something like 65 percent of Americans favor is also liable to be number one in malware authors' minds. Security specialist Barracuda Networks reported this week that it's possible to find more malware using Google than using Bing, Yahoo, and Twitter together.
This isn't a case of Google in any way being a better search engine; researchers didn't use queries along the lines of "infect my computer" or something like that. Also, the search giant didn't win/lose this contest by a small margin. The official Barracuda report just concluded, "Google takes the crown for malware distribution - turning up more than twice the amount of malware as Bing, Twitter and Yahoo! combined when searches on popular trending topics were performed. Google presents at 69 percent; Yahoo! at 18 percent; Bing at 12 percent; and Twitter at one percent." Those are some pretty startling differences. Let's hope Google implements some more security measures in response. Or alternatively, maybe the company will be able to disprove Barracuda's results. This report definitely doesn't do Google's reputation any good, though, and many users may not be able to shrug off security concerns. Yahoo and Bing could then see some gains as a result.
