Google Adds Web Timing Tool To Chrome 6
By: Doug Caverly 2010-07-29 Not too long ago, Google announced that it would begin factoring page load times into its search rankings. Now, there's added evidence of the importance of that figure, as a "Web Timing" tool has been integrated into Chrome 6.
This may or may not be something the average owner of a small site needs to worry about. Lots of other factors play larger roles in determining which website gets the number one spot in Google's search results, and it's no secret that most people still don't use Chrome. Also, a post on the Chromium Blog indicated that the tool is meant for a slightly technical-minded audience, stating, "The Web Timing draft specification presents a standard set of metrics for measuring web page load time across browsers. We're happy to announce that in Chrome 6, web developers can now access these new metrics under window.webkitPerformance." Still, if you're curious about what's going on, Tony Gentilcore, a software engineer who authored the official blog post, later added, "Web Timing now gives developers the ability to measure the true page load time by including the time to request, generate, and receive the HTML document." And Gentilcore cautioned people not to be alarmed if load times look slower than they expected; the new measurement system is more accurate, and should affect everyone in about the same way. Hopefully this development will benefit the average Web user without putting too much pressure on site owners.
