Google Looks At Gaming To Pursue Facebook
By: Doug Caverly 2010-07-28 Like it or not, Facebook is now almost synonymous with games like FarmVille, and that means a would-be competitor will need addictive casual games in order to be successful. Google hasn't missed this fact, either, with reports indicating that the search giant wants to establish gaming partnerships as it moves into social networking.
Amir Efrati recently spoke to "people familiar with the matter" and wrote afterward, "Google has been in discussions with top developers to offer their games on a new service it is building, these people said. Those developers include Playdom Inc., Electronic Arts Inc.'s Playfish and Zynga . . ." Those are some topnotch organizations in the social gaming space, signaling that Google really wants to succeed this time. (You may recall that the company's previous social efforts, including Google Lively, Buzz, and Wave haven't exactly amassed hundreds of millions of fans.) Success is at least theoretically within its reach, too. Considering how much money Google has, there's little reason to believe it won't be able to strike a deal or two, and then it'll stand significantly better odds of being able to draw users away from existing social networks like Facebook and MySpace. Still, it's necessary to remember that game developers have already made lots of money thanks to Facebook, and they might not be quick to make an enemy of it and take a chance on something new. We'll see what happens. It's possible Google will make things official sooner rather than later for the sake of getting a product out in time for the holiday season, when people often spend more time on their computers.
