MySpace Search Talks Said To Involve Google, Yahoo, MSFT
By: Doug Caverly 2010-07-07 It's no secret that MySpace isn't doing well in comparison to Facebook. Put it next to another site, though - say Twitter, Bebo, or even CNN.com - and it still looks great. The identity of MySpace's search provider is rather important, then, and the latest report indicates that its options are wide open.
To provide a little background info: MySpace's current search partner is Google, and MySpace benefited a lot from the deal, which involved a $900 million payment to it. But MySpace hasn't been able to meet some traffic targets, so it's almost certain that the company won't be able to renew the exact arrangement. That's where the fresh report enters the equation. Shira Ovide and Nick Wingfield wrote yesterday, "News Corp. is in discussions with Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. about replacing MySpace's crucial search-advertising partnership with Google, which expires next month, according to people familiar with the matter." Also, in case you couldn't guess, Ovide and Wingfield noted, "People close to News Corp. said any new agreement will be for significantly less money." (It seems that time constraints, in addition to popularity issues, could force a compromise here.) So we'll see what happens. Considering how often people tend to search for friends, bands, and other things on social networks, this issue could have a significant effect on whether or not MySpace is able to retain users.
