Google News Overhauled With Personalization Options
By: Doug Caverly 2010-07-01 In the past, the value of Google News has been tough to judge. Posts from random bloggers have been mixed in with articles from top-notch newspapers, and the pages-long layout required a lot of scrolling. It's gotten better over time, though, and Google's aiming to make it better again now with improved personalization.
One major change relates to subject matter. No longer will people have to sift through articles about sparkly vampires in order to read news about bombs going off in capital cities (assuming they don't want to, at least). A post on the Official Google Blog explained that something called "News for you" is "a stream of headlines automatically tailored to your interests. You can help us get it right by using the 'Edit personalization' box to specify how much you're interested in Business, Health, Entertainment, Sports or any subject you want to add (whether it's the Supreme Court, the World Cup or synthetic biology)." It's possible to play with the layout, too, picking between a list view and organized sections, and Google also noted, "-W-e're now allowing you to choose which news sources you'd like to see more or less often. You can do so in News Settings. These sources will rank higher or lower for you (but not for anyone else) in Google News search results and story clusters." All of this has the potential to make Google News a lot more useful. It's possible to skip the personalization options, too, if you'd rather not feed Google any more personal info or feel the new setup's okay as is. Have fun finding a solution that suits you.
