Google Retreats In China Ahead Of License Renewal Attempt
By: Doug Caverly 2010-06-29 Early this year, Google took a stand against censorship in China and announced the possibility that it would shut down Google.cn. Today, that proved unlikely. Google has said it will compromise an already-ineffective solution to improve the odds of renewing its license in the country.
David Drummond, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer at Google, wrote last night on the Official Google Blog about the Google.com.hk redirect. He said, "-I-t's clear from conversations we have had with Chinese government officials that they find the redirect unacceptable - and that if we continue redirecting users our Internet Content Provider license will not be renewed . . . " So Google's solution is to send users "to a landing page on Google.cn that links to Google.com.hk - where users can conduct web search or continue to use Google.cn services like music and text translate, which we can provide locally without filtering. This approach ensures we stay true to our commitment not to censor our results on Google.cn and gives users access to all of our services from one page." It's possible to argue whether this solution is good or bad. After all, many people were bothered by Google's original ultimatum, arguing that it was better for Google to maintain pressure and do a little good in China than leave entirely. It now appears that the search giant is giving in to the Chinese government, though, which isn't likely to impress anyone. Anyway, Google's Internet Content Provider license is up for renewal on June 30th, so we should soon find out if its decision has had any effect.
