Bing Improves Mobile Experience
By: Doug Caverly 2010-06-25 Using Bing from a mobile browser just became a much more pleasant - and efficient - experience. Microsoft introduced a handful of upgrades yesterday designed to make m.bing.com work well enough that people shouldn't have to bother downloading a separate app.
Here's a nice starting point: the pretty pictures the average PC user sees at Bing.com are now visible to mobile users, too. Also, maps should pan and scroll more smoothly. Delving a little deeper, a post on the Bing Search Blog named another upgrade as "-l-ocation detection through the GPS on your phone." Then there's "Local Search with suggested listings nearby and category search." Finally, the post encouraged users to "-f-ind places nearby, save them to a favorites list, and share that list with friends," and the mobile version of Bing will provide "-m-ore details on local listings, like parking info, price, cuisine, and ratings." Not bad, right? Indeed, all of these changes should give lots of people reason to at least try Bing on their smartphones, even if they're satisfied with Google, Yahoo, or some other option. The homepage picture alone will make Bing worth testing once a day. Consider that Bing's been made a default search option on the iPhone, as well, and Microsoft's share of the mobile search market seems even more likely to increase over the next month or two.
