Microsoft Tries Out New Mobile Ad Solution
By: Doug Caverly 2010-06-18 As smart phones become more and more ubiquitous, mobile search will become more and more common. And Microsoft - like many tech companies - wants to profit from this trend, so the corporation began testing a mobile ad solution with Hyatt, Quiznos, and a firm called Geodelic this week.
Consumers may be glad to hear that this doesn't involve anything too personalized and/or creepy, even though Geodelic specializes in location-based apps. Instead, Microsoft is just aiming to make it easier for people to get in touch with advertisers. Raj Kapoor, Global Director of Product Planning and Marketing for Mobile Advertising, explained in a post on the Microsoft Advertising Blog, "The ad creative for this product provides end users with a participating advertiser's local business information such as Name, Address, Phone Number, URL, and Description." Then here's a special save-the-user-from-finding-a-pen step: Kapoor continued, "By clicking the ad the users can choose to select an advertiser's website to find local business information or make a phone call." Which is clever. Of course, Microsoft has to compete with Google in the mobile advertising space just as it does in many others, and Google's also experimenting with click-to-call tech, so there are no guarantees of success. Various startups and smaller rivals will no doubt attempt to take control of the market, too. Still, the details of this pilot program sound promising, and it's a good sign for Microsoft that Hyatt and Quiznos haven taken its side at this early stage.
