Google Unveils Page Speed For Ads And Trackers
By: Doug Caverly 2010-06-11 Study after study has shown that people often abandon sites when pages don't load within a few seconds. It's likely that slow-loading ads drive many folks to use ad blockers, too. Site owners - and perhaps the average visitors - should be glad to hear that Google introduced a tool for Page Speed for ads, then.
The free-to-use tool works with both display and rich media ads, and does pretty much what its name might lead you to suspect. "Page Speed now enables developers to run a performance analysis of the ads, the trackers, or the remaining content of the page," a post on the Google Code Blog explained. Or to put it another way, "Web developers can use Page Speed to determine how ads and trackers impact the performance of their web pages, and ad and tracker providers can use this feature to tune their services for speed." Indeed, the tool has an "Analyze" menu that should enable people to take very specific corrective actions. So look for quite a lot of companies and individuals to take advantage of Page Speed for ads. Then of course Google, in addition to everyone else, stands to benefit from ad loading faster and representing less of a source of frustration for users.
