Android Found To Be Doing Well In The U.S., China
By: Doug Caverly 2010-05-27 Google's mobile operating system is doing rather well in certain parts of the world, according to a new report from AdMob. AdMob found that Android devices are now almost as common as iPhones in the U.S., in fact, and have surpassed the iPhone in China.
The iPhone is of course at a disadvantage insofar as it's just one device and the number of Android phones for sale is always increasing. Also, it's necessary to consider that AdMob, which is in the process of being acquired by Google, might not be the most impartial source of information. Then here's one more piece of information: AdMob thinks the iPhone outnumbers Android by a considerable margin on a global basis: 27.4 million to 11.6 million. Still, it looks like Android - and thereby Google itself - is getting a considerable foothold all over the world. AdMob determined that there are 8.7 million Android devices loose in the U.S. There are only 10.7 million iPhones, making it appear that the balance could tip rather soon. As for the situation in China, there are supposed to be 882,000 Android devices and just 725,000 iPhones. These statistics are a good sign for Google's share of the mobile market, especially considering that Google's had so many problems in China before now.
