Quintura Receives Funding For Mobile Visual Search
By: Doug Caverly 2010-05-19 A company that claims to have blazed some trails in terms of visual search now has the money to make the same sort of results available to mobile users. Quintura, which manages offices in both Russia and Virginia, received $1 million in funding to achieve this changeover.
A little background info: Quintura's actually received eight patents on its search technology, and if you play around with its site, you may see some similarities between its main offering and the Wonder Wheel Google unveiled not too long ago. Quintura saw them, too, and once threatened to pursue Google for patent infringement. Anyway, with regards to the new round of funding and what's next, Quintura's CEO, Yakov Sadchikov, told Robert Andrews, "We are going to shortly launch Quintura search apps for mobiles (iPhone/iPad, Nokia/Symbian, HTC/Windows Mobile, HTC/Android, etc.) . . ." And since many companies (including Google) agree that the mobile market represents the next big thing, this could turn out to be a rather important development. Even if Quintura never makes it big in the U.S., it could pose a threat to Google in Russia or choose to pursue the patent infringement case into this additional space. It's only fair to note that Google's Wonder Wheel hasn't exactly proven popular, though, and the average Google user might not even notice if the search option were dropped.
