Google Serves Side Of Navigation Options
By: Doug Caverly 2010-05-06 As much as you might expect inspiration to flow in the opposite direction - most reports concerning the search market pretty well prove that one company's doing better than all of the others - Google has taken a page from Bing and Yahoo's books, introducing a side panel of navigation options yesterday.
This side panel's rolling out, rather than launching everywhere at once, so don't fret if you don't see it yet. As for what the panel entails, Google VP Marissa Mayer explained in a post on the Official Google Blog, "The top section of the new left-hand panel builds on Universal Search by suggesting the most relevant genres of results for your query and letting you seamlessly switch to these different types of results." A search for "wind power," for example, yields options like "News," "Blogs," "Images," and "Books." Then it's possible to filter the results to find just the latest ones, and a "Something Different" sections also suggests topics like solar power, wind energy, and geothermal energy. This may or may not represent an upgrade, depending on one's point of view. An experienced searcher probably knows how to find what he or she's interested in without all the prompts, which sort of clutter up the interface. But the average person may appreciate the suggestions and find Google more useful as a result. Then here's one other change that's sort of questionable: Google's altered its logo a bit, making the colors brighter while eliminating the shadows and slight contouring of the letters.
