Google Acquires Visual Search Startup
By: Doug Caverly 2010-04-12 Sites and apps designed to help people identify music lyrics have become quite popular over the years; for music lovers, they can act as invaluable aids. And now, Google's acquired a company that performs the same sort of service for a more visual crowd, helping them identify works of art.
Until Google purchased it, Plink was a two-person outfit based in the UK. Its main offering was PlinkArt, "an app for your mobile phone that lets you identify almost any work of art just by taking a photo of it." This should tie into Google Goggles as the two organizations get a little bit of time to combine their assets. The integration is supposed to lead to all sorts of neat stuff, too, in addition the ability to recognize what's covered by the current PlinkArt library. On the PlinkArt Blog, the company's founders indicated earlier today, "We're looking forward to helping the Goggles team build a visual search engine that works not just for paintings or book covers, but for everything you see around you." Unfortunately, neither side's announced when the next step in this process will occur. Plink's purchase price also remains undisclosed. Congratulations are almost certainly in order, though, considering that Plink represents Google's first-ever UK acquisition.
