Google Delves Into Status Updates From Facebook

First MySpace, then Twitter . . . now, Google's bringing Facebook into its real-time results, too. The effort's just a little bit underwhelming as things stand because only public status updates from Facebook Pages are involved. Facebook Pages are officially defined as being "for organizations, businesses, celebrities, and bands to ...

...broadcast great information to fans in an official, public manner." Which is fine and well, since it's fun for individuals to display their likes and loyalties, and Facebook Pages are more polished than user-made groups.

The problem is that determining what was posted on Pepsi's Facebook account two minutes ago seems less important than finding out what real people have to say about a subject or situation. And this development leaves real people out of the equation.

Let's hope Google expands its relationship with Facebook in the future. The search giant isn't exactly in danger of losing its lead over Yahoo and Bing due to this small misfire, but the move isn't likely to help Google much, either.

One cause for hope: neither Google nor Facebook made a big deal about this move, with just a single tweet signaling the change. So maybe we'll see a more significant update heralded by blog posts and press releases when the time is right.
