Confirmed: Super Bowl Ads Drive Online Searches

Historically, the Super Bowl has been a pretty "offline" event - millions of people sit down in front of their TVs, not their computers, to watch a bunch of flesh and blood athletes run around a gigantic stadium. Still, this year's Super Bowl had a big impact on online searches. Here's the thing: as exciting as sports fans find the Super Bowl...

...it's possible that even more people are interested in the commercials. And sports fans tend to like 'em, too. So a whole lot of folks visit video-sharing sites after the game in order to catch the commercials they missed or re-watch the really good ones.

This led to a huge surge in searches for certain terms on YouTube. A post on the YouTube Biz Blog explained late yesterday, "YouTube saw queries containing the brand term SNICKERS rise by 18,000% days after the game, and on YouTube Mobile, queries containing DORITOS rose 5,000%."

Then when you consider that a commercial for pants directed people to visit a website, and that E*Trade is a website, it becomes rather hard to believe that only video search trends were affected.

Anyway, as the popularity of netbooks, tablet PCs, and smartphones continues to increase, count on seeing even more online tie-ins during future Super Bowls.
