...now to improve the performance of its web pages.

Richard Rabbat and Bryan McQuade, from the Page Speed Team, explained the tool further on the Webmaster Central Blog. Here is a small snippet:

When you run Page Speed, you get immediate suggestions on how you can change your web pages to improve their speed. For example, Page Speed automatically optimizes images for you, giving you a compressed image that you can use immediately on your web site. It also identifies issues such as JavaScript and CSS loaded by your page that wasnt actually used to display the page, which can help reduce time your users spend waiting for the page to download and display.

The tool is a Firefox Add-on and is integrated with Firebug. However, this is nothing new - Yahoo has had a very similar tool available for some time now called YSlow. Here are some of the comments from the online world:

Looks just like YSlow! How creative of them

It looks a lot like the great YSlow plug-in from Yahoo. But the more tools available to fight against the poorly conceived websites, the better !

So how is this not a shameless ripoff of YSlow?

Yeah, this is exactly like YSlow. Google has to build all of their tools themselves though to prove how smart they are.
