Google Yahoo! Deal: What Really Happened?
By: Navneet Kaushal 2008-12-05 If you are still are wondering what led to the termination of the famous advertisement deal between Google and Yahoo!, then probably you should read further: Prosecutor Sandy Litvack who was assigned to the case told the AM Law Daily that, the DOJ (Department of Justice) was about to charge Google with antitrusts lawsuit, and it was just three hours away from doing so!
The company was so close to being called as a monopolist had Google not announced that it has canceled the deal! So the case is clear in front of all of us! Google canceled the deal to avoid any kind of protracted legal battle but did not inform in a clear way that the Department Of Justice is going to charge a law suite against Google. Heres what Google posted on its official blog when the termination was announced: However, after four months of review, including discussions of various possible changes to the agreement, its clear that government regulators and some advertisers continue to have concerns about the agreement. Pressing ahead risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to relationships with valued partners. That wouldnt have been in the long-term interests of Google or our users, so we have decided to end the agreement. And heres what the prosecutor told the AM Law Daily: We were going to file the complaint at a certain time during the day. We told them we were going to file the complaint at that time of day. Three hours before, they told us they were abandoning the agreement. . . . It would have ended up also alleging that Google had a monopoly and that -the advertising pact- would have furthered their monopoly.
