The Google Hive Mind
By: Dan Morrill 2008-09-29 Google has been phenomenally successful, and while we might laugh at it when we compare Google to the Borg, and talk about our Google brain, a new theory called the Google Hive Mind brings us one step closer to the Borg than anyone would care to admit.
Google has many in the industry scared, scared that if they start to compete against Google, they will suddenly find themselves with nothing, because Google has an application that works or does something that the other app will not do. This is a very familiar argument, we were having this argument about Microsoft in 1999/2000 as Microsoft was cleaning up the competition, and taking huge chunks of market share in many industries. With a similar comparison, the way that Google operates is different than Microsoft, but has the same influence as Microsoft, and the same target audience, the user. The hive mind has been hugely successful in growing Google's business through a symbiotic relationship with its customers. But that's also a weakness: Google may seem too threatening to those same customers, as it grows. As it expands and expands, some of those outside the hive begin wondering if it needs to be constrained. Source: Searchengineland Google is going to do what Google is going to do, but as they get bigger, the old anti-trust issues start coming out as well. With all the things that we can do with the Google ecostructure, from using their web browser, e-mail, calendar, search, scholarly research, advertising, book search, check trends, and the whole host of other things, we end up with a product that might reside in the cloud, but we use as much as we use our desktop applications. We might actually use Google software more than we use our desktop applications if the user has adopted Google Docs and other sharing programs in the Cloud. While Google might be the new Microsoft, that means that the next ten years might be a lot more rocky than they would have wanted. This might be good for many people who are out there developing cool new stuff. Microsoft started to lose after the dot com bust followed quickly by anti-trust issues. We are on the verge of another contraction of the economy, and Google already being targeted for Anti-Trust issues. Interesting thoughts, but has Google become the big new bad boy in town, or will the somehow dodge the same bullet that kept Microsoft distracted for a very long time?
