MSN Cracking Down On Bad Links
By: Scott Van Achte 2007-02-01 According to the Search Engine Roundtable, MSN Live is penalizing heavily for Back Linking.
The target lies mostly on sites with a number of inbound links from FFA, (free-for-all) link directories as well as those involved in purchasing links from highly visible networks. FFA directories contain hundreds, if not thousands, of un-moderated, often unrelated links posted by users. By posting your link to an FFA directory, in most cases, the link is live within seconds. Google for years has been ignoring links based on FFA sites, but not outright penalizing for it (at least the link recipient sites). With MSN it seems it would be possible to get a site in trouble by simply mass submitting it to FFA sites. The resulting site would see a drop in MSN rankings having been entirely innocent. This brings the question back, "Is it possible to damage the rankings of another person's site?" Well, in MSN it just may be. There are also a number of legitimate reasons why a person would purchase a text link on a highly visible network including advertising. These links are not all about "gaming" the search engines, they are also about traffic streams - and purchasing ad space should not reflect in penalties. Google often ignores these purchased links, but certainly does not penalize for them. MSN's penalties also appear to reach out to all sites on the same hosted IP in some cases. This is a very bold move on the part of MSN, as in many cases there are large numbers of unrelated, non-interlinked sites owned by different webmasters hosted on the same IP through inexpensive web hosts. Many of these other sites would be sitting ducks if by coincidence a neighboring site was banned by MSN. Luckily for anyone affected by this, MSN is currently hovering around the 10% mark in terms of Market Share, with Google and Yahoo way above.
