Ireland Ditches Google, Embraces Map24
By: Doug Caverly 2006-08-31 In the Emerald Isle, Google is not king. Google Maps, at least, may have been overthrown - an entity known as Map24 has received some very positive attention lately.
The Map24 interface has left some users frustrated, but the coverage, at least, is considered superior. The Map24 site described the tool as a "route planner and maps for UK, Europe, and -the- USA." "Discover our world of interactivity," it suggested, with Map24's "seamless zoom," "smooth actions," "extensive searches," and "precise route planning." On the EirePreneur blog, the "updated NavTeq coverage of Ireland" is mentioned. The author described said that "it is indeed very impressive. Much more so than Google maps anyway." "Damien" was the first reader to respond, writing, "The interface is a little buggy on my mac, but I have to agree - the street level navigation is much better than Google (around Letterkenny, anyway). Great site." "The data's there," "Justin" replied, then seconded Damien's thoughts. "The site interface is buggy, though - lots of 'broken image' icons when I go to the print page, and it's slow." "On top of that," Justin continued, "it seems to be averse to creating a permalink for a set of directions, which is annoying . . . still, it's the best out there right now. Come on Google, you have serious competition now!" Now, these three individuals are not a representative sample of the Irish population, but generally speaking (Guinness, The Chieftains, rich landscapes and old castles) what's good enough for the Irish is good enough for me. Map24, here I come. Tag: Map24, Google Maps Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo! My Web | Furl
