An 'Online Lie Detector' For Search
By: Doug Caverly 2006-08-29 The Japanese government intends to create what one newspaper described as an online lie detector that would act in accordance with a search engine. The project has been allotted a budget by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of 300 million yen, according to one source, which translates to about $2.6 million dollars.
As that relatively small number implies, the final result may not be too spectacular. "The reality appears to be not so much -a lie detector- as an automated fact-checker that draws on related information to spot how likely something is to be a load of old balls," according to Dottocommu. Dottocommu ventured into Slashdot Japan, which is (naturally) in Japanese, and was kind enough to bring back an English write-up of the original story. "The Ministry envisages it being able to give you search results in order of their reliability, or tell you that a piece of info is 95% crap and ask if you'd still like to display it," the page stated. An obvious question, of course, is "will it work?" Dottocommu had an answer. "They note that key hurdles will be whether they can find reliable internet-based sources of information related to a search, and develop technologies that can accurately assess meaning and provide high-level machine translation, amongst other things." "We somehow doubt that the AI Holy Grail of software that understands the meaning of natural language and can translate it accurately is about to be reached by some government researchers with $3 mn in funding," the Dottocommu article continued. "But still, nice of them to try." That's true. There are worse ways for a government to spend time and money. Tag: Online lie detector Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo! My Web | Furl
