Google Further Entrenches Itself In China

The American expansion into the Chinese search frontier has been the subject of much criticism for a myriad of reasons, with the willingness to censor search results in order to placate the Chinese government being at the forefront.

While the criticism of doing business in China was not limited to Google (MSN and Yahoo have launched search services in China as well, and they adhere to the same rules Google does), the popular search engine did seem to take the brunt of it. I guess that's the price for being on top.

However, Google has remained steadfast with their commitment to China. This was further evidenced by the announcement of Google's partnership with China.com, a popular portal site that sees a great deal of traffic. According to TradingMarkets.com, the partnership calls for Google to provide a number of search services, including advertising and standard web search capabilities.

The TradingMarkets article featured a quote from Johnny Chou, the President of Sales and Business Development for Google China that says:

"China is a key area of focus for Google and we are rapidly expanding our presence and operations in this important market. We are excited about our partnership with China.com and we expect our current partnership to bring significant strategic benefits."

...which pretty much confirms the idea that Google is going to stay in China (and therefore, continue following the rules of the Chinese government), regardless of what the US Government, the media and human rights advocates (PDF) say or think.
