Google Turns A Deaf Ear
By: Doug Caverly 2006-07-31 A member of the Digital Point Forums was, in his (or her) words, "Adsense spanked." Google apparently warned this person to stop conducting click fraud, and then disabled the account. This person, who claims to have been unaware of the fraud, posted an e-mail conversation in which Google more or less ignored his (or her) pleas for help.
The thread is currently three pages long, with 51 posts. In case you're thinking this might be some sort of scam or lie, the person in question, "SERPalert," has made 794 posts since joining on March 22, 2005. A veteran member isn't likely to pull such a prank. "It has come to our attention that invalid clicks or impressions have been generated on the Google ads on your site(s) through users of third-party programmes paid or provided with other incentives to visit your site," began the first e-mail from Google. "If we continue to detect invalid clicks or impressions from these services on your ads, we may disable your account to protect our advertisers," it concluded. "How can I combat it happening in the future?" SERPalert responded. Google replied with another form letter mentioning the looming possibility of a disabled AdSense account. "I am genuinely keen to resolve this issue!" SERPalert claimed to have written back. "But I feel I am left between a rock and a hard place. You've 'confirmed' my account has violated your tos but you're not telling me how. I've done nothing intentionally or indeed by accident to my knowledge. I certainly haven't clicked my own ads. If there's anything else specific you can tell me, it will aid me in preventing further instances of this problem." That was about the end of it. Google wrote, "As you know, Google treats instances of invalid clicks very seriously. By disabling your account, we feel that we have taken the necessary measures to ensure that invalid clicks will not continue to occur on your site. Due to the proprietary nature of our monitoring system, we're not able to disclose any specific details of these clicks." Rules are rules, but that's pretty tough.
