Google Forges Ahead With Adsense For Radio
By: Doug Caverly 2006-07-27 Ads, brought to you courtesy of Google, are migrating from the computer and onto the airwaves. The company best known for its search engine appears to be moving ahead with its plans to bring Adsense to radio. Detroit is being used as a test market.
One Google page tells the (abbreviated) history of this process. "On January 17, 2006, Google announced that it had purchased the radio advertising company dMarc, which provides an automated system that allows companies to advertise on the radio," the company stated. "This will allow Google to combine two niche advertising media - the Internet and radio - with Google's ability to laser-focus on the tastes of consumers." Well, most consumers don't have a taste for advertisements, but that's beside the point. Some people in the industry appear to be excited, at least. "I think dMarc has an opportunity for us to connect with advertisers we don't normally interact with," said John Fullam in an interview with CNET. Fullam is the vice president and market manager for Greater Media Philadelphia. "It's big for radio." David Bank, a media analyst at RBC Capital Markets, thought it might take some time for the system to catch on. "It's disruptive, and that's what will keep it from really getting off the ground in the short term," Bank said to CNET. "It runs counter to 75 years of industry practice." Google has tried its hand at print ads, and met with less than stellar success. It seems like the company would be wise to brace itself for the same result with its effort in radio. Still, with earnings of $2.46 billion in one quarter, an initial poor showing wouldn't do the corporation much damage. Google may be in this one for the long run. Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo!
