Yahoo Leads In Pre-Roll Video Streams

By: Doug Caverly

Research and Markets (the worlds largest market research resource) has released a report on pre-roll video (video streams preceded by ad units). According to their data, Yahoo has the largest share of the streams, followed TimeWarner, Microsoft, and Viacom.

Surpassing a group like that is quite an accomplishment, and Yahoo didnt do it by a small margin, either. Yahoo, TimeWarner, Microsoft, and Viacom controlled 23.97 percent, 13.7 percent, 11.40 percent, and 8.54 percent of pre-roll video streams, respectively (as measured from January through April 2006).

Pre-roll video is an important type of content. Research and Markets reported that of 1.2 billion free or ad supported streams served by major media brands per month . . . 94% of those streams have pre roll inventory. Its outpacing its paid counterpart, too " Pre roll video inventory . . . has grown an average of 105.2% annually over the past five years, compared to free or ad supported content streams, which averaged 72.3%.

That rate makes it practically omnipresent. The insertion ratio is now almost 1 to 1 (one pre roll for every content stream accessed), the report stated. The research director weighed in on the implications of these statistics.

The high double-digit growth rates seen in pre roll ad units reflects just how much broadband publishing has caught the attention of rights holders, said the director. Five years after broadband streams surpassed narrowband, 2006 is quite noteworthy for the number of broadband extensions rolling out.

Yahoo appears to be doing quite well in a fast-developing market.
