Zeitgeist Takes A Turn For The Darker

The Google Zeitgeist was more bleak than usual this week, with several death- and violence-related incidents making the list. It's not all depressing, though - there's still a fair mixture of more upbeat (or just plain random) items.

Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd, was number three on the Zeitgeist. Although mental health issues and drug problems led Barrett to leave the band, he made an indelible impact on rock in his career. Barrett died at the age of 60 in his home in Cambridge.

A much younger musician also made the list as she begins her married life this week. Avril Lavigne came in fourteenth; she married Deryck Whibley of the band Sum 41. Although I don't care much for the music of Lavigne or Sum 41, the new bride did a fantastic cover of Metallica's "Fuel" during an MTV Icons special a few years ago, so I wish the couple well.

In that special, a number of soldiers spoke about the role of music in war. The new rash of violence in the Middle East was prominent on this week's Zeitgeist, with "Israel News" ranking fourth and "Lebanon" coming in seventh.

More violence was on display in the number one item on the list: the Zidane headbutt video. As the Zeitgeist report says, it seems that people just "can't get enough of the confrontation French kicker Zinedine Zidane instigated against Italy's Marco Materazzi during the final game of the World Cup on July 2, replaying hundreds of videos uploaded to popular websites."

Another media favorite, the late Princess Diana, returned in a roundabout way as Chi Magazine ranked fifth in the Zeitgeist. This publication created an uproar by printing a photo of the dying woman.

The rest of the Zeitgeist (which really is lighter, I promise) can be found here.
