Google Video Expands Overseas
By: Doug Caverly 2006-07-17 Google Video is growing. Although this offering has not been among Google's most popular projects, it is now set to launch in eight new country-specific versions. Most of the focus will be on European nations, although Canada will also get its own site.
Google has also managed to nab a number of partners for the services. ITN, the Cartoon Network, IMG Media (a sports company that holds the rights to Wimbledon video), the Cousteau Society, the History Channel, Talkback Thames, and France's National Audiovisual Archive will offer clips. Most of the clips will be available for free. There's a small catch: the service may try to lure users into viewing (and paying for) other clips. Still, there will be a lot of complimentary content from a lot of interesting sources. Some people view this as an effort to draw away some users from YouTube and MySpace's UK video efforts. As reported by Sci-Tech Today, Joanna Shields, the European director of partnerships for Google, commented on the expansion. "The rise of online video is making it easier for people to express themselves. By launching Google Video in these new markets we will enable more people in more countries to search for, upload and share video content in more languages." Google Video has already helped some companies grow in new markets. Mark Wood, the chief executive of ITN, believes moving overseas helped his British company. "Our content has proved a huge hit in the North America attracting over one million previews in its first six months," he said. The new Google Video sites will be released for Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and France. Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
