A Pirate-Centric Zeitgeist

The Google Zeitgeist for the week ending July 10 is perhaps even more scattershot than usual, but there is a focus on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. A couple of madmen come into play, as well.

The pirate feature ranked third on the Zeitgeist. Despite mixed reviews, the movie did quite well in the box office. Two of its stars also made Zeitgeist status, with the lovely Keira Knightley coming in sixth, and Orlando Bloom placing twelfth. Johnny Depp was not ignored, either - his character, Jack Sparrow, ranked ninth.

Depp's eccentric portrayal of the pirate has won the Caribbean films a lot of fans. The strange behavior of one soccer star has probably lost him quite a few. Zinedine Zidrane was captured on film aggressively headbutting a player on a rival team. Zidane, who still won the Best Player award (although it may be revoked) placed first on the Zeitgeist.

The, um, "sanity challenged" leader of North Korea did not make the Zeitgeist, but his nation did. North Korea, which has taken to polluting the Sea of Japan with defective missiles, ranked seventh. And although Kim Jong Il is probably unaware of the eighth-place Zeitgeist item, it seems right up his alley.

UFC ("Ultimate Fighting Championship" to the uninitiated) won that spot. Formerly a sort of no-holds-barred human cockfight, the organization is now regulated and has been recognized by many as a legitimate sporting event.

The rest of this week's Zeitgeist is as follows:

2. July 4th
4. Benjamin Hendrickson
5. Ken Lay
10. H5N1
11. Fabio Cannavaro
13. Justin Timberlake (who will cry if you pretend to repossess his house)
14. Laura L. Findlay
15. Emmy nominations
