Ze Weekly Zeitgeist 
By: Doug Caverly 2006-07-06 The Google Zeitgeist for the week ending July 4 has been released. This one, like most, contains an array of unrelated topics, people, and things. There's a vague focus on sports, though, particularly soccer and tennis.
"Zidane" came in at number twelve. His Wikipedia entry notes that he is "often considered to be the best footballer of his generation, and one of the greatest of all time." Another soccer player, Cristiano Ronald, also made the list, at number fourteen. In terms of tennis, one of the sport's major tournaments made it to number three on the Zeitgeist. Wimbledon, held on the grounds of the All-England Club, has been the setting for quite a few surprises and upsets this year. Andre Agassi retired, and every single American was knocked out of the tournament much sooner than anyone expected. Maria Sharapova, who competed in Wimbledon, also made the list (barely"she was fifteenth). Sharapova was, much to my disappointment, beaten today by Amelie Mauresmo. The Tour de France (second), Michelle Wie (at number eight), and the NBA Draft (thirteenth) rounded out the sports-related Zeitgeist topics. The person with the most gaining search query can be vaguely connected to football, however; the video of her getting pegged by one has been immensely popular. Star Jones, who departed from "The View" (the show placed sixth in the Zeitgeist), won first place. For information on what has occurred, tune in to any of the late night shows. Although I'm usually a Conan O'Brien fan, Craig Ferguson has made the funniest comment about Jones to reach my ears, so perhaps you should pay special attention to him.
