Google Calls For Gadgets & Dating Advice

Somebody needs to talk to Google about what's sexy. Google Desktop Developer T-shirts are not aphrodisiacs, not even in the right environment. There, I said it. Not sexy. Not at all. But if you want to impress the geek posse, winning Google's Desktop Gadget Designer contest is a good start.

Google Calls For Gadgets & Dating Advice
Google Gadgets Developers Get The Call

The winner gets $5,000 for creating the best gadget by July 31st.

    Quick tip: $5,000 = approximately 1,000 drinks/ aphrodisiacs.

Google T-shirt = one sympathy drink/ pity party/ high fives from D&D circle

Second and third prize win $2,000 and $1,000. All submitters get a T-shirt or other prize, just like when you show up at the job fair.

What's a gadget? If I have to tell you, you're probably not going to win. But here goes anyway. Google Desktop Gadgets are "mini-applications" developers can create for desktop use. The possibilities are only limited by creativity. Past Desktop Gadgets include memory games, NASA TV, credit card processing, and calculators.

Google recently released its Google Desktop Gadget Designer, available as part of Google Desktop SDK. According to the submission page, the Gadget Designer is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and WYSIWYG UI creator that features:

Drag and drop UI elements to simplify UI design and development.

Simple editing and value entry of UI element properties, including assigning functions to events.

Full test environment; run and test your gadget outside of the Desktop Sidebar.

Takes care of development busywork such as writing XML definitions and zipping up your files.

Two of the reasons Google thinks you should submit something: the lure of a cotton T-shirt that says something very special about a man without him having to brag; and karma.

" Google Desktop Developer T-shirts may have aphrodisiac qualities...at least in the right environment," writes the Go, Go Google Gadget Team, and it "provides a useful or fun gadget to the world and helps your karma."

Somebody check with Earl to make sure they're right about that.
