Will The New MSN Eat Into Google?
By: Chris Richardson 2006-05-23 "I am wondering if the new search on MSN will start to eat away at Google? I realize Google is still the preferred choice of most web savvy searchers, but Google is getting so big."
A poster named logodesign77 in the WebProWorld forum continued with this statement and question ... I think that MSN and possibly Yahoo may start to put a dent into Googles user base. I for one have been using MSN more and more lately as the returns seem to be much cleaner and less spammy...... at least that is my opinon for what it is worth. In fact, I am starting to optimize some of my websites for MSN rather than google as it seems to payoff quicker.... I may get fewer hits, but I get them much sooner. What do you think?? A sample of responses: sub_kovert I have started use MSN search more and more - I agree it seems to return more relevant results (for UK searches anyway) I don't think Google should get too worried though. I have also noticed that MSN seems to crawl more often and changes made in my sites are reflected in search results. Out of the three i think Yahoo is the worst. dnelson It is easier to optimize a site and see quick results in the MSN search engine than it is for Google, but the bulk of traffic is still generated by Google. I wish that the MSN would cut into Google's monopoly a bit, but this will not happen until most people, including me, start to change their searching habits. Donald Nelson Hurga yah, msn seems to definitely index and update faster, but sometimes the top ranked stuff is a little odd. It seems to place a higher precedence on .com than .net and .org names, regardless of incoming links. bj Though I agree with you re the relevant returns for when I do searches of my own, when I look at the stats and my conversions for my site, it's almost all coming from google, with the rest coming through messageboards like this one, or through people landing on my site in other ways. Almost nothing through MSN or yahoo turns into money for me, yet when I look at how I come up on my chosen keyphrases in those engines I'm roughly comparable on them to where I'm coming up in Google for the same phrases (almost always in the top 5 somewhere.) Go figure. smoothunit If google does not straighten out there Bigdaddy system, they are handing it to MSN on a silver platter. Sitemaps group is amass in total confusion and anger, with pages being deindexed by the truckloads. Google suggests that the problem is solved, but it sure does not read like it. I regained my Google pages back by dumping the sitemap and hand submitting them, they came back in 2 days. What I see in my stats is, the searchers are fed up also. Msn and Yahoo have both banged my keywords much more than they ever have. I suppose if you deindex a few million pages, it is hard to find what you are looking for. PumaSpirit Seems to me Google is getting to big for its own good. I have long quit doing searches on Google because I am getting sick and tired of getting "top" searches consisting of nothing but auto-generated directories with lots of Google ads. Absolutely useless. Wastes my time. My time is too valuable to take a loss while making Google richer. They don't care about your, mine or God's web site. They care about THEIR revenue and it shows more and more in the way they conduct themselves. I talk to many people in my course of every day business and have come to understand I am far from being the only one who thinks so. Google may just have a rough awakening some day, because we are going to go where we get relevant search results and our clients get their money's worth. What else is a Search Engine for? Pushing its own interests first? Anyone else feel the same way? quickregister I certainly hope that MSN is eating into Google searches. I think Google is a bit too dominant now. They are getting greedy with Adwords now demanding higher and higher minimums. It all starts with quality searches. This gets the eyeballs. The advertising will come later. chrisJumbo I too have seen our pages ranked much better with MSN then the other two. And receive about 3X the traffic because of it. I realize as my rankings improve on the other two the traffic from them will probably eclipse MSN, so we continue to optimize for Yahoo and Google as well. rumblepup I can tell you my experience. I get much more traffic from Google than from MSN, however, MSN has deep crawled my site, and Google rankings go up and down, and um and down again, because of Big Daddy. However, at least for my site, the traffic from MSN has generated MUCH more in sales than the traffic from Google. It's been estimated that MSN users are more apt to purchase than Google or Yahoo users. Makes kind of sense. Again, this is solely from my experience and in no way is a statement of fact. From what I have seen, Google users are more research users than anything else. I know that "Googling" a term has helped me. Yahoo users looks like more of community/ group driven usage. Chat, e-mail, IM, is very popular Yahoo services. I also think that Yahoo has a big chunk of the Youth Market. MSN users are found to be more of a casual internet user, looking for products and services more than anything else. Remember that MSN users get most of their users from people who just don't change their IE homepage when they get their Windows computer. They just connect to the internet and go. And, it seems, that most of these users are in the financial market that will make purchases online. Most of my MSN customers are professionals like teachers, doctors, lawyers, executives, etc. Another big chunk of my customers are typically office staff, secrectaries, assistance, customer service personell. Why? I've a simple theory. The people are described above are extremely busy people. They really don't care what search technology they are using, or which is the better search engine, or whatever. They use what is default on their computer. jordanmcclements I think I am right in saying that the UK is even more google centric than the US? But MSN is definitely making inroads (although their image search sucks - wait a minute - this is the case for all search engines at present...). What are your thoughts on this?
