Google Hits The Street Down Under
By: David Utter 2006-05-19 Street-level mapping comes to Australia and New Zealand by way of Google Maps, though this soft launch appears to need further development to please users in those countries.
A blog post at Google Maps Mania noted the quiet appearance of New Zealand and Australia on the street-level maps. Street names appear both in map and hybrid view, as they do in other cities Google has mapped at this level. For now, the street-level view of the two countries is just that. As a number of commenters on a blog at the Sydney Morning Herald have observed, searching on the map could be better. While Google can find the Sydney Opera House without difficulty, a search for "hotels near Sydney Opera House" did not match any locations even though AdWords returned an ad for the Star City Hotel. Those commenters also found driving directions were not working yet. The maps also seem to be quite a bit out of date, as a couple of comments claim many new roads are missing from the Maps. Not being able to find Bondi Beach with Google Maps is very odd, though. Still, this is the first launch, and adding more data to Maps probably takes some time, especially to make it work correctly with Local searching and AdWords. --- Tags: Google Maps, Australia, New Zealand Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
