Yahoo: The Future Of Information

The newly unveiled redesign of the Yahoo homepage incorporates elements gleaned from one school's streamlining of its name.

That name change, from School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) at UC Berkeley to the School of Information, or even more simply, iSchool, represented a switch to "a simpler, streamlined, and more accessible identity," Yahoo's Havi Hoffman wrote on the Yahoo! Search blog.

Hoffman drew a parallel between the school's mission "to create, find, manipulate, share, store, and use information in myriad forms" and the Yahoo homepage redesign:

The Yahoo! home page has changed slowly and incrementally over the years to reflect the evolution of how the Web is used. In the past, this page has been called to task for various causes, but it's continued to serve as a welcoming front door to the Web and a shared experience for hundreds of millions of people.

Some of the significant changes were singled out for attention in Hoffman's post and listed there:

Personal Assistant - a preview area displaying recent messages from Yahoo! Mail, an online friends list from Yahoo! Messenger, and local weather forecasts, traffic, and events.

Yahoo! Pulse - a place to discover the most popular and interesting Yahoo! searches, as well as pop culture trends, music, videos, photos, and all the stuff people are looking for, reading, viewing, listening to, rating or sharing online. It's a window into the attention stream of our estimated half-billion users.

Navigation changes, personalization options, and an enhanced search box with eight options atop the main page became part of that redesign. Ajax programming figures prominently in the redesign, but for now it's just for the benefit of Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 1.5 users. It doesn't work in IE 7, Opera, or Safari at this time.
