Gtalkr Gone Googling
By: David Utter 2006-05-15 The Gtalkr instant messaging client, which combined several applications into a single Flash-based webpage, has vanished from the web.
Gtalkr blended Gmail and Google Talk with Yahoo Maps (which has a Flash API unlike Google Maps) into a single application. Its founders, brothers Dudley and Wes Carr, have both accepted positions with Google, according to their homepage: Thank you for your interest in Gtalkr. Unfortunately, the Gtalkr instant messaging client is no longer available. The Gtalkr website has been taken down while we pursue new projects as Google employees. Thank you to everyone who tried out, regularly used, and supported Gtalkr. Here's a list of alternate clients to be used to connect to the Google Talk IM service:
http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html More on the likely acquisition of Gtalkr by Google appeared at the TechCrunch website. TechCrunch's Mike Arrington spoke to Wes Carr, who was very careful on what he could say to Arrington: Wes was able to answer only some of my questions. In answer to "were you acquired?" he said "no comment, I cannot comment on that" which tell me that yes, they were acquired. Wes and Dudley will be moving to the Kirkland, WA Google office within two weeks, both have accepted jobs as engineers. Wes also said that "they were very happy with the outcome."
Wes had clearly been instructed by Google on what exactly he could and could not say. Again, that tells me that an acquisition took place - if it hadn't, there would not have been those restrictions. Om Malik of Business 2.0 commented on this as well, writing, "Google does need all the help it can get for GTalk, which is not making any meaningful dent in the IM space as yet." He also noted that with GTalk embedded in Gmail, Google does not need another client for those two services. --- Tags: GTalkr, Google Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo! My Web | Furl Have a bookmark! -
