YouTube and Ifilm are out of luck as C-SPAN has told both of them not to carry clips of comedian Stephen Colbert's performance at the White House Correspondents' Association annual black-tie dinner.

White House foes have enjoyed Colbert's riffs on President Bush during the event, and numerous clips appeared online at sites like YouTube and Ifilm. But C-SPAN demanded the removal of those videos from both sites.

"We asked Web sites to remove the Colbert video when they posted it without our permission and we will continue to do the same with other Web sites who violate our copyright," C-SPAN said in a statement.

C-SPAN found a non-exclusive relationship with Google Video much more appealing. "We worked with Google because they agreed to post both dinner segments in their entirety with links to c-span.org," C-SPAN said.

Those segments include Colbert's performance and Bush's presentation, both in their entirety. Providing both was a condition of the deal with Google. They can also be viewed from C-SPAN's website.

YouTube is not pleased with the outcome. Having been the drivers of the video's exploding popularity, YouTube seethed at C-SPAN's action. A YouTube executive listed more details in a New York Times article:

Julie Supan, senior director for marketing at YouTube, said officials there were stung by C-Span's behavior because, she said, the site had helped fuel momentum for the Colbert clip.

"This was an exciting moment for them in a viral, random way," she said. "To take it down from one site and (upload) on another--it is perplexing."

She also noted that YouTube had tried to make a similar deal for the clip that Google Video eventually made. "Google will stop at nothing to try to win over the community," she said.
