BMW Runs Google Down With An Ad
By: David Utter 2006-05-04 After Matt Cutts demonstrated Google would back up its efforts on banning international sites that violate its guidelines by dumping BMW.de, the automaker took a delayed shot at Google in response.
"The search for yourself doesn't run on Google," reads the advertisement displayed on the Google Blogoscoped website. In the black and white ad, one of BMW's finely-constructed engines occupies the center of the image. Above the image, the parting shot by BMW appears. The ad promotes BMW's K 1200 R motorcycle, which BMW claims is the "most powerful naked bike ever to roll off the assembly line." 163 horsepower...127Nm of torque...sorry, got a little involved there. Google's problem with BMW.de stems from early February, where it was discovered that the site had been using doorway pages to enhance its PageRank with Google. Cutts posted about BMW.de's problematic pages: That's a violation of our webmaster quality guidelines, specifically the principle of "Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users."
BMW.de removed the pages quickly, and the site was reincluded in Google's index. Apparently, someone at BMW has held a grudge against Google for the negative online buzz the deletion generated at the time. It's a great ad. --- Tags: BMW, Google Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
