Searching For Understanding
By: SearchNewz Staff 2006-04-27 Unique to history, people have built machines that understand people. Search companies, however, ...
... who build those machines find themselves wracked with misunderstandings daily - perhaps machines understand people better than people understand people. Case in point: Technorati just got booted from Chinese servers without a word from officials and hasn't deciphered why. The silent treatment caused Technorati to consult the blogosphere. "Of course, we're taking these reports very seriously, and we're trying to get more accurate information," said Technorati's Adam Hertz. "We'll let you know when we know more." The Chinese government said to gain understanding you must first know the sound of one hand clapping; but before that, Technorati must snatch the pebble from the master's hand. An Israeli advertiser doesn't understand why a rival fashion chain is getting all of their would-be Google traffic. From Information Week: An Israeli women's fashion chain, Matim Li (ML), is suing Google Israel in Tel Aviv Magistrates Court for $530,000, claiming that Google allowed a rival chain to register a link in Google's search engine using ML's trademarks. Google basically told the plaintiff to talk to the hand. As duly noted by Search Engine Journal's Loren Baker, Yahoo has taken away the only reason left to visit Alta Vista. Yahoo-owned translation tool Babel Fish is now part of the Yahoo! family as well. My foreign language skills aren't good enough to know if the initial translation is on the money or not, but it's fun to translate into another language (German for example) and then retranslate that text back in to English to see how it holds up. Compare this passage of refried English to the original: English-German-English -- Language is only mutually agreed upon symbolism. So at something point, someone or any group of people decided certain sets of symbols whether written or spoken, were not attached, even vulgaeres -- those naturally the unwanted side effect of forming it merrily had. Original -- Language is merely mutually agreed upon symbolism. So, at some point, someone or some group of people decided certain sets of symbols, whether written or spoken, were inappropriate, even vulgar--which of course had the undesired side effect of making them funny. But possibly no one understands this. Drag this to your Bookmarks.
