Fear And Loathing In Googlemania
By: SearchNewz Staff 2006-04-26 There's not a whole lot of earth-shattering news in the world of search today, but there are several small tremors: Google sticks it to IE, but wimps out in China; and Googleholics come to grips with their addiction.
For those poor lost souls still actually using Internet Explorer, they'll see something new on the Google homepage: a promo for Mozilla Firefox. A link directly beneath the search bar reads "Firefox with Google Toolbar, tabbed browsing, safe surfing." Directly beneath that is an example of what the toolbar looks like. "This is the first time a third party product has ever been featured on Google's homepage," said Paul Kim, Director of Product Marketing for Mozilla Corporation. And then there's what Valleywag calls Google's "pansy-ass watercolor" flash ad for the search company's (censored) Chinese Guge brand. Please hold the appalled as Guge touts its democratic ranking system: " We see each website as a voter, voting for one another. All these search results are ranking completely according to the voting, because we believe that everybody is equal in front of the information." None of Google's seeming contradiction, however, has deterred Joe Schmidt's revelation to the world that he has Googled 7000 times in the past year alone. Over 100 others join the Googleholic Schmidt at Digg.com discussing their obsession and pining their chafed mouse hands. But proceed with caution, warns mark1372: "Reading the endless number of people's search results is like watching a slideshow of someone's boring vacation. Or hearing them talk about how brilliant their two year-old is." Heh. Isn't it surreally ironic we're reading about someone reading about how many searches people have conducted and laughing at it? Hey! What do you mean by that? Nothing. Just that if you can read this, you're too damn close. Tag: Google Tag: Firefox Tag: Guge Drag this to your Bookmarks.
